About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Oakland's vibrant culinary scene, Enssaro Ethiopian Restaurant offers an authentic taste of Ethiopia with a welcoming, warm atmosphere that feels like a home away from home. Specializing in Ethiopian and East African cuisine, Enssaro shines not only as a flavorful destination for lovers of traditional fare but also as a thoughtfully inclusive spot for vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free diners.

From the moment you step inside, the rich aromas of slow-simmered organic Ethiopian spices and fresh herbs gently envelop you, setting the stage for an unforgettable culinary journey. A standout dish is the iconic Doro Wot, a hearty chicken stew featuring tender bone-in chicken and boiled eggs bathed in deep, aromatic sauce, celebrated by first-timers and seasoned patrons alike. For those seeking plant-based delights, the Vegan Gluten-Free Ethiopian Hummus Butacha and the Shiro Sampler provide vibrant, velvety textures alongside bold, earthy flavors that celebrate the beauty of Ethiopian vegan cuisine.

The menu is a thoughtful mosaic of traditional favorites and innovative twists—try the Beyond Meat Sanbussa for a plant-based take on a popular Ethiopian snack, or the Ethiopian Nachos that cleverly fuse bold spices with crispy textures. Pair your meal with the soothing and subtly spiced Tea with Cinnamon or venture into something unique like the Ethiopian Honey Wine (Mead), which perfectly complements the rich, flavorful dishes.

Diners often rave about the variety and balance of flavors present in the Veggie Sampler and Meat Sampler Platter, offering a harmonious exploration of Ethiopian stews, sautéed vegetables, and perfectly fermented injera bread that is both tangy and tender. Signature sides like the Gomen (steamed cooked greens with garlic and ginger) and AtaKilt (sautéed cabbage, carrots, and potatoes with a turmeric kick) provide fresh, wholesome contrasts that round out the meal.

Enssaro's inviting atmosphere mirrors the genuine hospitality that customers consistently highlight in their reviews. I had never tried Ethiopian food before, so this is not a comparison. After explaining this to the gentleman and that I would have no idea what to order, he thoughtfully considered the matter, asked a couple of questions (when I last ate; what I had) and put together a custom plate based on the meat sampler for me to try. The Highlight: Doro Wat (“if you haven’t had it, you haven’t really had Ethiopian food”): Absolutely phenomenal flavor! The sauce has a touch of kick that brings the senses to life, and the cheese adds in a dynamic texture. It was so good I went back the next day for lunch to try the Special Kitfo (steak tartare) and I was blown away. While the Doro Wot was bursting with flavor, the Kitfo was an exploration of texture. Can’t recommend this spot highly enough!

Felt like I was back in Ethiopia. The Derek Tibs is a must crispy, rich, unforgettable. Great atmosphere, and big thanks to Netsanet and Solomon for the warm hospitality. I’ll definitely be back

I ordered takeout from Enssaro for a work appreciation luncheon, and the experience was fantastic from start to finish. The young lady who helped me (whose name I don’t want to misspell) was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. While I waited, she offered me some tea and even shared Vegan Gluten-Free Ethiopian Hummus (Butacha) and Gluten-Free Injera. She also took the time to show me how to properly enjoy the food with injera, just as it’s traditionally done in Ethiopia — such a thoughtful and memorable gesture. The food was excellent, the service was exceptional, and the hospitality truly stood out. I’ll definitely be back. Highly recommend Enssaro! P.S. My apologies for the poor photos! Only took one as an afterthought.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had such a wonderful experience at Enssaro! The staff greeted me with warm smiles and provided excellent service throughout my visit. The food was absolutely delicious — every Ethiopian dish was full of authentic flavor and made with so much care. I truly loved everything I tried. I came all the way from Atlanta, Georgia, the meal was well worth the trip. Highly recommend Enssaro to anyone who wants to enjoy amazing Ethiopian cuisine!

I’m giving this a 4star because I don’t know Ethiopian food that much so not much to compare. But the food was delicious. Injera was just the perfect sour, red lentils were on fire like spicy! Cabbage and potatoes so so good, the chicken was yummy and the lamb tibs was so good a little lamb-y but good The service was awesome.. so nice and kind

Third time having Ethiopian food and it was a tasty experience. Our large platter for 4 people included beef, chicken, lamb, salad, vegetables and an other items. We enjoyed glutton free injera—which was completely satisfying. Service was prompt and personable even with a full restaurant.

I love Enssaro so much! This is my go-to for a solo meal, big group, and dates. Everything is delicious and spiced perfectly if you like heat!! The appetizers are a must - especially the hummus and nachos (photo). The drinks are great too. Raphael & Solomon are great hosts and neighborly. Portions are generous and they have many combinations for meat lovers and vegetarians. I keep coming back!
